Start Planning Your 2026 Autumn Trip to Japan

Although the 2025 foliage season has come to an end, now is the perfect moment to plan your autumn trip for 2026.

This year I visited two of Hiroshima’s most stunning foliage destinations — Buttsu-ji Temple (Mihara) and Momijidani Park (Miyajima) — and captured scenes to inspire your future journey.

Japan’s autumn season, known as “kōyō”, is one of the most beautiful times to visit the country.

Here’s what you can expect in Hiroshima next year.

When to See Autumn Colors in Hiroshima (2026 Guide)

  • Peak season: Mid-November to early December
  • Weather: Cool and comfortable (10–18°C)
  • Best for: Photography, hiking, temples, slow travel
  • Crowds: Less busy than Kyoto or Tokyo

Hiroshima and the Setouchi region experience a slightly later and longer autumn season, making it ideal for flexible travelers.

Travel Idea: Follow Autumn Colors Across Japan

Japan’s autumn moves from north to south, beginning in Hokkaido in early October and ending in Kyushu in early December.

If you have enough time, you can travel down the country and enjoy peak colors in several regions.

Buttsu-ji Temple (Mihara): Quiet Autumn Beauty

Located deep in the mountains of Mihara City, Buttsu-ji Temple is one of Hiroshima’s most peaceful and lesser-known autumn destinations.

Towering cedar trees, mossy paths, and brilliant maples create a perfect atmosphere for slow, mindful travel.

Miyajima Momijidani Park: World-Famous Autumn Colors

Just a short walk from Itsukushima Shrine, Momijidani Park is one of Japan’s most celebrated maple valleys.

Hundreds of maple trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold every November.
